Chapter One

Does this sound familiar?

“k… at… cat?”

They say every sound but can't push them together into a word.

b or d?

They mix up letters and sounds, even ones they've practiced.

Knows the ABCs

They know their letters but still can't read simple words.

Guessing

They look at the first letter or the picture and guess.

“It's too hard.”

Reading time ends in tears, and books have stopped being fun.

Falling behind

You can see the gap growing, and you're not sure how to help.

If you nodded at any of these, your child isn't behind for good. There's usually a gap in the foundation, and gaps can be filled.

Chapter Two

Before we add letters, we start with sound

Most parents don't know that reading starts with listening. Before a child can read a word, they have to hear every sound inside it. So I start where the gap is, not where the worksheet is.

Watercolor seashell
Phonemic awareness

Hear

Hearing, blending, and pulling apart the sounds in spoken words.

/sh/ /e/ /l/ … shell
Open book showing Aa and an apple
Phonics

See

Connecting those sounds to letters and letter patterns.

/a/ … a … apple
Decodable book open to Sam sat on the mat
Fluency

Read

Reading smoothly and with expression, without stopping on every word.

Sam sat on the mat.
Open book with a harbor and lighthouse rising from its pages
Comprehension

Understand

Moving from learning to read to reading to learn.

Lost in the story.
A peek inside a lesson
Card: /sh/, the sound Card: sh, the spelling Card: ship, shell, shut, shop, the words

Your child hears the sound first, then learns how it's spelled, then reads it in real words. Sound before symbol, every time.

Ears first. Eyes later.

About the author

Hi, I'm Miss Shay.

I was a shy kid who escaped into books. My Nana read me Beatrix Potter and Winnie the Pooh, and somewhere along the way the words stopped feeling like words. I was just inside the story. I want every child to feel that.

I spent ten years in the classroom, most of them teaching first grade, where I fell in love with the very beginning of reading: the sounds, the blending, the moment a word finally clicks. Phonemic awareness and phonics are my favorite things to teach.

Today I'm a mom of two. I homeschool my own little reader and tutor families from home. Every lesson is built around your child, because learning to read doesn't have to be boring to work.
